BSC Center Accreditation

BSC's Center for Lactation Education has undergone close scrutiny by several organizations which acknowledge the high quality of the Center's programs.  Courses have been evaluated for both college credit equivalency and continuing education credit.

BSC is approved as a long term provider of continuing education through the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association (PA Nurses) and the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).  We are accredited by the International Lactation Education Accreditation Council (ILEAC).  PA Nurses is an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.   IBLCE is a nonprofit corporation established to develop and administer a voluntary certification program for lactation consultants, based on certification guidelines developed by the U.S. National Commission for Health Certifying Agencies.

Approval of an institution as a long term provider indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality periodically applied through a peer group review process.  An approved institution is one which has the necessary resources to achieve its stated purposes through appropriate educational programs, is doing so, and gives reasonable evidence that it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future.  Long term providership approval is not partial but applies to the entire institution for all of its offerings.  It is a guarantee of the quality of every course and program offered.

In 1995, the American Council on Education (ACE) approved several of BSC's courses for college credit recommendations. A team of content experts selected from college faculty evaluated BSC's courses, indicated that this training is comparable to college level courses, and made college credit recommendations accordingly. In 2001, renewal of ACE approval was not sought. The low participation rate among BSC students did not justify continuing to commit resources to ACE services. In addition, distance learning is increasingly recognized by colleges and universities throughout the world as a viable alternative to classroom instruction.
